Textbook Reviews

Evaluations of specific school science books and curriculum materials.

Each review is for a particular textbook, CD-ROM, DVD other piece of curriculum (including complete courses, where one review covers the textbook and workbook together). This category of reviews focuses on materials that are specifically written and sold as part of a school curriculum; the Resource Reviews category focuses on assessing other sources of content that might be used in homeschooling.

Our Textbook Review authors are subject-qualified ASA members (e.g., physicists review physics textbooks, biologists review a biology textbooks). ASA members are also well-informed laypeople or trained theologians who understand and appreciate the diversity of Christian and religious thought relating to science.

Each review has the same basic structure:

  • Specifications: A simple list of information about the textbook, including the title, author, date, publisher, subject, grade level, and whether it includes questions, test banks and answer keys.
  • Ratings: A list of reviewer assessments and 5-star ratings of the textbook and its author’s presentation according to various parameters. These include classification of the author’s church affiliation, theological position, bible-science position, and origins position; prominence and coherence of the textbook’s Christian (or religious) content; and accuracy and quality of the science itself.
  • Discussion: One to several paragraphs explaining the reviewer’s reasons for assigning particular ratings and giving particular recommendations. Reviewers are asked to cite features and qualities that they like, to critically evaluate the scientific quality and Christian or religious content, and to recommend supplementary resources that would help to complete, balance or enhance the curriculum.

Links to Textbook Reviews will be listed below when we have completed and posted them. As the list becomes larger, we will provide more sophisticated tools to search for particular items and categories of content. If there is a curriculum that you would like us to review, please tell us about it by completing our Home Teacher Survey or using the Contact Us form.
